Beyond Wall Street - Episodes 7 & 8: Global Asset Allocation & Managing Investment Risk (The Art of Investing) [VHS] Overview

In these two episodes from the PBS series Beyond Wall Street: The Art of Investing, the critical issues of how to allocate assets and how to assess risk are examined in visits to two experts on the subjects. Money manager Peter Brinson, an expert in asset allocation, provides an informative lesson in how to prudently pick where you invest, and how to make sure that your entire portfolio will be able to handle whatever turmoil circumstances may throw at it. Brinson breaks out a few pie charts to illustrate how an individual investor can start thinking constructively about a portfolio, and provides his own tips on making sure that different portions of the portfolio can offset risks. The idea of risk management is explored further in the program devoted to economic consultant and author Peter Bernstein. Visiting an oil-drilling rig to underscore the nature of risk, Bernstein talks about specific risks (such as an individual stock dropping) and systematic risk (when an entire market heads south). Investing always involves some risk, of course, but Bernstein makes intelligent points about how an investor can recognize what they are and can prepare for bumps in the road. Hosted by journalists Andrew Tobias and Jane Bryant Quinn, these are informative looks at important subjects that are more entertaining than the subject matter might suggest. --Robert J. McNamara
